At a cocktail party in New York recently to which all the "in" critics of popular music had been invited, the conversation eventually got around to the Lennon Sisters and the Lawrence Welk band. "Strictly squaresville," said one critic, and most of the grou nodded agreement.

"Too bad," said another. "Nobody can stand them but the people."

Thus the Lennon Sisters join a noble group of performers which includes not only Lawrence Welk, but the late Mario Lanza, Liberace, Guy Lombardo and others who can't please the critics-but who have no trouble selling out the hall whenever they make a personal appearance or dominating the best-seller charts whenever they release a new record.

What turns the critics off-and turns the public on-about the Lennon Sisters is their down-homey look and style. The girls are attractive and personable without becoming glamorous. They sing familiar favorites in a straightforward way, without musical or electronic gimmicks. Obviously, there are a lot of people who like their music this way. The Lawrence Welk TV show has become a top-rated fixture, almost from its first appearance on the American Broadcasting Company network-and the Lennon Sisters have become an important part of the Lawrence Welk family almost from their first appearance with the Champagne Orchestra.

The record you hold in your hands is an excellent sampler of the talents of these lovely girls. Here are a few standards, like "No Is the Hour" and "Sentimental Journey," mixed with some of today's best-"Georgy Girl" and "I Want to HOld Your Hand"-with some lesser known tunes thrown in. What you'll hear when you put this record on your turntable is sincerity, simplicity, bounce and joy. The critics wouldn't like it. But we think you will.
