Although his critics won't admit it publicly, even they concede in private that Lawrence Welk knows how to pick winners. Whether it's the new talent he features on his weekly program for ABC-Television, the tunes he plays and records, or the arrangements which give such recent hits as "Moon River" and "Calcutta" that distinctive Lawrence Welk sound, the maestro knows exactly what his fans want, what will appeal to them.

Perhaps no musician in recent years has been responsible for discovering and launching the careers of as many talented performers as ahs Welk. The genial gentlemen from North Dakota has showcased such Pickwick artists as the Lennon Sisters, Jo Ann Castle, Myron Floren and Jerry Burke, to name only a few. Each developed as artists in their own right, making their own personal appearances and hit records.

Welk isn't impressed by the spectacular, and neither are his fans. Instead, he features the familiar, the easy-to-listsen-to in upbeat arrangements and performances that make Welk's champagne music easy to dance to as well, if you're so included. It may be a quiet number from the hit parade (it'll almost never be a tune with a Big Beat) ; and oldie like "Smoke Gets In Your Eyes" (usually not one of the brassy production numbers); a melodic film score like "Exodus" (Probably not the driving theme from a current blockbuster). Result: a winning TV series that has seen him outlast every other musical personality who's tried his own TV series (and helped him roll up an enviable list of best-selling records as well).

The current collection is a perfect example of the Welk genius at work ---deceptively simple arrangements of standard favorites. Yet no matter how simple the arrangements appear to be, chances are you'll be playing these tracks over and over again---for friends, to dance to, or simply for listening alone.
