LAWRENCE WELK PRESENTS
THE LENNON SISTERS SINGING THE
BEST-LOVED CATHOLIC HYMNS

The Lennon Sisters believe in living their faith. Because of this, they sing the hymns in this album with the love, devotion, tenderness and humility which can only be found in the true believer. The first side is devoted primarily to hymns for special occasions. For the second side, they sing the hymns which might be sung at any regular mass, in the usual order. In each is to be found the true spirit of believing.

To me, these lovely young ladies represent the ideal youth of America. Their fresh beauty, quick smiles, boundless energy and fine capacity for wholesome fun are a delight to behold. Each time I am invited into their home for a Sunday afternoon, I take away a feeling of being just a little bit better for having known them. (Also, I usually take away a charlie-horse from overdoing it in one of their family softball games. They make me feel a little younger than my muscles insist I am.)

During my years on television, I have been privileged to present many fine performers. No group or soloist has been better received (nor more deserrving) than the Lennon Sisters. They are real troupers. Invariably they are prepared with their numbers and are cooperative in every way. As a result, they have grown bigger than any of our other presentations. The volume of their fan mail indicates that, in the minds of millions, they have become a symbol of family unity and American living. A great deal of this mail contains requests for the girls to sing religious songs. It is because of this that the album has come about. I think it is a wonderful way of answering these many requests.

These hymns were actually recorded in the choir lofts of the St. Paul and St. Gregory Catholic Churches in Los Angeles, though it was in the parish of St. Mark's Church in Venice, Los Angeles that they sang their first hymns. The organ accompaniment was provided by Anthony Joseph Newman, a brilliant young musician who recently left to begin a five-year scholarship at the Paris Conservatory.

I have often been grateful to my son for bringing the girls to my attention back in 1955. Working with them has been a rewarding experience. I am delighted to share it with you.

Lawrence Welk

Every year at the holiday season, we hear many interpretations of the Christmas carols and songs we all love. They are done instrumentally, vocally, in chorus and by solo voices, by pop singers and classical performers. From jazz trios to symphony orchestras, the music of Christmas is subjected repeatedly to these various treatments.

There is no more appropriate and heart warming rendition of the Yuletide melodies than that which is afforded by the fresh young voices of America's favorites, the Lennon Sisters. They bring that family feeling to every kind of music, and it is especially applicable to these Christmas evergreens. Their youthful appeal and the zest with which they perform demonstrate the pure enjoyment they find in their singing, a spirit wholly in tone with the spirit of Christmas.

The selections in tis album are a pleasant mixture of the best-loved traditional carols and thepopular songs about Christmas which have survived long enough in recent years to be considered standards. To both types of matieral, the Lennon Sisters bring their natural quality, a charming sincerity, sweet harmony, energetic performance, all adding up to an expression of the happiness which prevails at this season. You are cordially invited to share this very merry Christmas with the Lennon Sisters.

Christmas is many things to many people.

It means holly wreaths, crowded department stores, trimming trees, noisy toy shops,
egg nog parties, Christmas Eve mass, Christmas morning worship services, friends and
relatives, turkey dinners, used gift wrappings, exhaustion, conviction that "it's
lucky it comes only once a year," and an assortment of gifts you can't use and have to exchange, the sullen, grey faces of the poor families, prayers - and music.

Music is part of CHristmas that comes closest to being common to all - in every land
around the earth where the birthday of Christ is celebrated.
No other oliday, in fact, has such a rich musical heritage. And Christmas music has
the widest imaginable sources. It stems from the earliest, pre-medieval period in
countries throughout Europe as well as from the pens of the more inspired Broadway
songwriters of the present day.

Wherever you go at Christmas, you can hear the outpourings of the traditional as well as of the modernist. On the main street of your town, loudspeakers that hide behind the storefront decorations tell the musical story. Church chimes peal out the familiar carols and a Salvation Army Santa's record player catches your attention with the songs of Christmas. If you attend a party during the holiday season, it is likely to become, at a moment's notice, a group caroling session.

The songs you sing at your party are likely to be both kinds - the traditionals as
well as what you might call the "pop" Christmas songs. This group has its own set of
classics like "White Christmas," "Jingle Bells," "Sleigh Ride,' "Silver Bells," and
"The Christmas Song."

And for your Christmas party, where the interest must inevitably shift to the singing of the good and the favorite songs, what better accompaniment could you seek than the tailor-made selection of twelve, expressed in the sparkling musical voice of Lawrence Welk and his famous TV orchestra?

This new Coral high fidelity recording provides you with that fine program, in
instrumental settings that literally call out for the sing-alongers to join in.

Play this favorite group of Lawrence Welk renditions this Christmas and for many a
Christmas to come. These are the holiday evergreens that each year come to life again to shine like a newly lighted Christmas tree.

Invite everyone to join as maestro Lawrence Welk leads the Christmas party singing or let the excellent quality high fidelity versions of these songs help you make light of the job of cooking CHristmas victuals, wrapping presents or trimming the tree.

Listen now to Lawrence Welk, for a merrier musical Christmas!

"To some 20,000,000 - twenty million - viewers, Lawrence Welk is the finest thing that has happened to popular music in two decades." This is said on the authority of TV Guide which recently devoted a efature article to Welk and his music under the title "A Good Time for Mother," to which was added this subtitle: "That's the Philosophy behind Lawrence Welk's Tremendous Success."

Practically everybody - or at least everybody who looks at television - knows that every Saturday night Welk's orchestra is seen and heard from coast to coast. They also know that his music ispopular with listeners of every age - teenagers, middle-agers, and oldsters.

By this time almost everybody also knows the Lawrence Welk story. They know that, in 1878, the Welk family came from Alsace-Lorraine, on the border between France and Germany, and settled in a North Dakota town which bore the Alsatian name of Strasburg. When he was still a child Lawrence picked otu tunes by ear on the family parlor organ - probably this childhood association made him use the modern electric organ which he now features so prominently in the orchestra. Young Welk also learned to perform on an old push-button accordion; in fact he learned it so thoroughly that, while he was still in his teens, he earned money playing for local parties and dances. Since that time the accordion has become his chosen instrument - in fact, one might say it is a Lawrence Welk trade mark.

Today, Lawrence Welk and his Champagne Music is probably the hottest dance band property int he record business. His records sell to the point that, wich each new release, the number of advance pressings must be stepped up to meet the ever increasing demand. Here's a band leader who knows what the people want. What's more, he knows how to give it to them.

THE LENNON SISTERS

Consider the plight of today's performers. Each recording artist is plagued by songwriters and publishers to cut material. The better known artists are proportionately more beset.

In the realm of easy-listening performers, the best way to stay at the top is to be discerning. Poor material , poor selection, poor arrangements or poor recording work can be more disasterous than a poor performance.

Luckily the Lennon Sisters are well aware of this and have mantained a constant record of making outstanding selections. This ends with the proper choise of musicians, technicians and arrangers; but its very beginning is in the golden ear which gives them the edge in choosing material for their recording dates.

Theirs is the mystical taste which enables them to pick from the finest long known material needing little adaption to their own brand of performance quality, and it extends to the current crop of new hits which may have to be altered considerably to meet their high standards. Yet the foursome is infinitely capable of finding songs with the innate spark of greatness. They are able to choose and adapt only the finest for themselves.

On this session, the team works with familiar tunes in their own familiar style to create something entirely new from teh fertile subject matter involved. Borrowing material, but not manner from the original, the femmes create a "new" original all their own.

There is no imitativeness here. The songs are made to stand for themselves with support only from the Lennon Sisters. Each of teh creations has been taken because it has the unique strength to undergo alteration, and it becomes even more unique because of the adaption of the performers to this material and the feeling it bears within itself.

Beyond the beat that so determines today's hits, there is quality. It is this qualification that at once attracts the Lennons to their songs and the songs to Lennon-ization.

Listen here to the superb blending of material and performance in a half hour of accomplished artistry.

Millions of Americans will always be indebted to young Larry Welk, Jr., for having brought these talented youngsters to the attention of his famous dad. His discovery led to their being featured on Lawrence Welk's weekly Dodge TV program, and, later to their own starring roles as album recording artists. What Larry spotted was that Dianne, Peggy, Kathy and Janet Lennon have a rare combination of beauty, winsome charm, clear voices sweetly blended, natural showmanship, and the stage presence of old-timers. It must be a winning combination, for the response to their weekly appearances is unanimously voiced in one word: "More!"

Their father, Bill Lennon, himself a veteran of show business, had a lot to do with building in the know-how, which gives the girls the ease of seasoned performers at an age when their natural, youthful appeal might very well have sufficed to launch their career. Bill saw to it that they were ready, trained and competent to take advantage of the big break when it came.

We, their listeners and devoted fans, are lucky winners, as the prettiest-quartet anywhere around applies its harmonies to these twelve favorites.

LAWRENCE WELK is a band-leader who is not only a skillful craftsman but an unusually cooperative colleague. He has always been quick to share credit with his co-workers and win from them the greatest possible response. In these recordings Welk is happy to feature Alladin, Jim Roberts, Alice Lon, Jack Martin, Larry Hooper, and Bob Lido, all of whom give distinction to this collection of TV favorites. They help make the Welk Champagne Music more sparkling than ever.

The Welk sparkle has grown with his popularity. Today some 90 million listeners hear him and thrill to his music. Music was always a part of the Welk family. His father, Ludwig Welk, brought the love of music with him when he escaped with other Alsatians from the invading Prussians in 1878, and came to America. The Welks settled on a small North Dakota farm. There were eight children; Lawrence was next tot he youngest. As a child he listened to the tunes his father loved and, before he was in his teens, he was a competent accordion player.

He was only thirteen when he bagan playing for community dances ; he was not much older when he was heard over the inaugural broadcast of radio station WNAX at Yankton, South Dakota with his orchestra - and "orchestra" which consisted of one drummer and one accordion player. Soon Larry added a saxophone and a piano and gave his group such fancy names as "The Hotsy Totsy Boys," "Lawrence Welk and His Honolulu Fruit Gum Orchestra," and "The Biggest Little Band in America" - this last because its five members performed on thirty instruments.

Lawrence Welk's organization survived all these titles. Gradually the orchestra was enlarged - it changed its character - the instruments were regrouped - new rhythms and new arrangements were introduced. Finally it achieved that characteristic lightness and bouncing effervescence which earned it the appropriately bubbling name of "Champagne Music."

THE LAWRENCE WELK GLEE CLUB
under the direction of Pete Lance

The God-given human voice is tehmost beautiful of all instruments. That's why I have always tried to feature a great many and a great variety of singers. That's why, too, I have always hired musicians who could 'double' in voice. This is what led tot he development of the Glee Club, for as the orchestra grew in size, the number of singing musicians increased. And before long I had more than I could handle. That's when I called in vocal director Peter Lance, a couple of years ago, to take over the
Glee Club. Pete is an honest fellow, very much on the ball, he knows and loves his work and his association with us has proved most satisfactory.

Pete didn't lose any time in getting started with the boys. Whenever they weren't rehearsing as musicians, he was rehearsing them as singers. And before long the Glee Club became one of the most popular features of our show.

Although the Glee Club has been doubled in size for this album - and that was just to increase the fullness and give it more of the sound of a live performance - the arrangements are the same ones which we use on our TV show for Dodge, and they have become familiar to our audience.

All of these songs are my favorites, too. And some of them have little stories behind them which make them kind of special to me and might make them more interesting to you.

I was always a great fan of the "Firestone Hour." My wife and I would never miss the program if we could help it. And always the part we liked best was the theme song, If I Could Tell You, which was written by Mrs. Idabella Firestone. I think it was a great loss to the American people when that show went off the air.

The President of Dodge, Mr. Paterson, is Scotch. And he's always kidding me, wanting me to play Scotch songs. So Comin' Thru the Rye is for him.

I have found that Americans are a very religious people. This is a country of all kinds of faiths. That's why the song, I Believe, which is a beautiful song, serves us so very well in our programming. It is a religious song for anyone and everyone.

Speaking of religious songs, certainly no group has contributed more to this kind of music than the AMerican negro. It's almost impossible to choose a favorite spiritual, there are so many wonderful ones. But Deep River is certainly a favorite of many. Pete Lance wrote up this arrangement, we did it on the show, and the response was overwhelming. From then on it was one of our most popular Glee Club numbers.

One of the best songs in the album, I think, is Halls of Ivy. It was the theme song of a TV show, too. But what I like particularly about it is the wonderful way it opens up for the male voices. It is very effective.

The song that means the most to me is God Bless America, and I'm sure millions of other people feel the same way. I think Irving Berlin has said for so many of us what we feel very deep in our hearts. I am always happy and proud to present this song.

The rest of the numbers I don't have much to say about, but not much has to be said. They are all big favorites with the folks who listen to us and they are all different kinds of songs, making the album into an interesting variety of music. The Whiffenpoof Song I have always wanted to record, and it's such a good number. Danny Boy, of course, is an Irish song, and it always gets a big reaction on the show. Dark Eyes is a Russian gypsy number which comes off very strong. Jeannie With The Light Brown Hair is one of Pete Lance's favorites because his wife is named Jeannie. But everyone likes this Stephen Foster song. We have many requests for it. Marching Along Together brings in a rousing march tempo, which is always welcome. And Vilia, the beatufiul song by Franz Lehar from his operetta "The Merry Widow," is always a favorite.

So many people have come to enjoy our Glee Club that we felt we really should make an album with just them, not the orchestra or anybody else. So that's what we have done and we sincerly hope you enjoy it.

Probably one of the most popular forms of music everywhere is the polka because it stems from more than one country such as germany, Poland, Lithuania, Switzerland, and many others. Mercury Records takes pleasure in presenting to you this Long-Playing recording by Lawrence Welk and his orchestra, one of the most popular band leaders in America, and one of the leading exponents of the polka playing art.

To choose Lawrence Welk as the star in this album titled, "Music For Polka Lovers," is the most natural thing to do, for Lawrence was born and raised in Strasburg, North Dakota, right in the middle of a community which doted on polka music. To add to this natural bend toward polkas, Lawrence gained a love of music from his father Ludig, whose favorite pastime was playing the accordion. The accordion is considered universal as the basic instrument for a polka band, and thru help from his father, Lawrence at the age of 13 was already playing polka music for local dances in North Dakota.

Lawrence Welk's first taste of show business came when he went on the road as an accordion soloist, a tour that was soon to make him well known throughout the vicinity of the Black Hills. His deft showmanship and his fine playing soon led to the formation of his first band, accordion and drums which later were supplemented by piano and saxophone, and by 1927, thanks to a few appearances on radio, his orchestra was known throughout the midwest as the "Biggest Little Band In America." All through this "growing up" era, Welk played mostly polkas but he gradually learned and began performing more modern numbers.

As the years passed, Lawrence gave more and more thought to the idea of giving his music a personal and distinctive touch - something that would set his music apart from other orchestras and make it recognized the moment it was heard, regardless of what type of music he was playing. It took a long time, but eventually the right formula was hit upon - a lightness of quality with a bubbling flow - he called it "Champagne Muisc." As his popularity rose, Welk began adding more instruments but always leaning heavily on the "Champage Music" style and soon the nation at large was to know that Lawrence Welk was a man to be contended with when it came to big name bands. Another thing that Welk never forgot, was his heritage and the music he grew up with, polkas. He felt that if he came from such a background, others did too - millions of them. Polkas became a primary part of his repertoire. No matter where he played, Chicago's Aragon, Hollywood's Pladium, or some small town affair, Welk always inserted several polkas. Even now that he is one of the biggest attractions on television, Welk is still giving the public music that they want and love - polkas.

As you listen and enjoy this recording, you will notice that Lawrence Welk did a remarklable job in selecting the numbers to be presented here. Among the more popular tunes you will hear, "Hoop Dee Doo," "Emilia Polka," "Julida Polka," "Tiner Polka," "Bar Room Polka" and the catchy "Military Polka." You will also hear such favorites as "Dakota Polka" "Kit Kat Polka," "The Merry Christmas Polka," "The Laughing Polka," "Chopsticks Polka," and a fancy version of "Tiger Rag." Here is a musical treasure that will soon become the most cherished item in your collection, done by the master of them all, Lawrence Welk.

The beautiful sun-lighted window on the front cover of this album belongs to the 12th-century cathedral of Notre Dame in

Chartres, France. This giant kaleidoscope of stained glass, along with the three huge lancet arch windows at right,

illuminates the north transept of the ancient cathedral. Created by gifted French glass cutters so very long ago, the

windows tell to all who behold them the story of Christ, His Angels and His Saints. In the tradition of the Chartres and

of the season, we at Goodyear would like to express to you all, in this, our ninth Christmas album, our cincerest wishes

for a very merry Christmas.

Petula Clark opens with a new song written for her and recorded especially for this album, "The Happiest Christmas." She

offers also the beautiful "Silent Night, Holy Night."

Next, Bing Crosby lends his easy, relaxing style to a delightful performance of "Secret of Christmas."

"The First Noel is given tender treatment by Connie Francis. She also performs the lovely "O Little Town of Bethlehem."

Richard Kiley, who thrilled millions in "Man of La Mancha," recorded three selections especially for you: "O Come All Ye

Faithful," "God Rest Ye Merry, Gentlemen" and "Panis Angelicus."

The Lawrence Welk fans, the Christmas mood is well expressed by three favorite carols: "Hark! The Herald Angels Sing,"

"Good King Wenceslas" and "It Came Upon A Midnight Clear."

The London Symphony Orchestra and the Roger Wagner Chorale, conducted by Erich Leinsdorf, combine their talents in a

performance of two beautiful Latin hymns: "In Dulci Jubilo" and "O Sanctissima."

Mantovani and His Orchestra perform the favorite "O Holy Night" and "Skater's Waltz."

Lena Horne gives her bright and beautiful interpretation of "Winter Wonderland" and "Jingle Bells."

Finally, Vladimir Horowitz offers the warm and charming "A Christmas Tale for Children."

The artists united in this album for the first time are familiar to everyone who enjoys hearing good music well played. Brilliant young organist Bob Ralston has been featured on the Lawrence Welk television show for over three years. The orchestra known as the Living Strings is a particular favorite among those who like their music romantic, melodic, or just plain pretty. Arranger-conductor Johnny Doubles is also admired for his skills among music lovers who enjoy the re-creation of a melody in all its inherent beauty. His pen here transforms each tune into a sparkling and complementary vehicle for the Living Strings and Bob Ralston without losing sight of the composer's original intention for melody, harmony, rhythm.

Musical material in TWILIGHT TIME ranges across many styles and moods. Each selection, from Debussy's Clair de Lune to the torchant Guess I'll Hang My Tears Out to Dry, was chosen to showcase a particular mood from the many made possible through this delightful instrumental pairing of orchestra and organist. There's the cheeriness and plain "fun" of Twilight Time and Cruising Down the River. There's the depth of feeling portrayed by Moonlight Sonata and Reverie...the bright loveliness of Vanessa...the tranquility of Land of Dreams. Not to be overlook is the new styling of the well-remembered hit combination of "Moonglow" and "Theme from Picnic." Show buffs are sure to appreciate the inclusion of the title tune from the new Broadway musical triumph, On a Clear Day (You Can See Forever.)

There are many musical moods included here for your enjoyment and given new charm by the Living Strings, arranger-conductor Johnny Douglas, and organist Bob Ralston - a happy blinding of talent for a happy blending of sounds.

Orchestra leaders like Lawrence Welk know a lot of things about dancers. And one of the things they know is that as the night progresses the dancers get younger and more romantic. It really happens. The older folks go on home and the younger ones keep on dancing, closer and closer.

By "younger" Lawrence means the dancers who grew up in the Forties and Fifties liking the sound of the "big bands," the full rich swinging sound that made dancing and romancing a happy combination.

Dancing and romancing haven't gone out of style at all, so Lawrence has developed a late-in-the-evening type of orchestra with just the right instrumentation and repertoire. Unlike Lawrence's early-evening "Champagne music-makers," this group is made up of four horns, four trombones, four trmpets, six reeds and a rhythm section. The songs played are for the most part ones that emerged and became popular during the big band era, sentimental songs that are ideally suited to cheek-to-cheek dancing.

For a period of ten years, early in his career, Lawrence Welk had a six-piece orchestra. It was good experience, it was a living, and he built quite a reputation with it. But it was frustrating. He always dreamed of the day when he could have all themusicians and singers he wanted, when he could produce any and every kind of musical presentation.

With the coming of televisiona nd his skyrocketing rise to national popularity, Lawrence had the opportunity and the need to see his dream come true. He could do all the things he had long wanted to, indeed, felt compelled to do them by the demands of a weekly show that he hoped would appeal to all kinds of people all over the country.

By now it is obvious that Lawrence has more than succeeded. His remarkably versatile orchestra, whether on TV or playing in ballrooms, is capable of all kinds of music-classics-polkas, jazz and all manner of current pop tunes. Most famous of his orchestral styles, of course, has been his "Champagne Music," a gay and bouncy approach to the dancefloor which has never been equalled in public acceptance.

The younger dancers, however, wanted something more solid and sentimental, and Lawrence was happy to give it to them. Now, here is the result - big new sound, the swinging sweet and lovely sound of Lawrence Welk. Here is an album designed, as Lawrence himself puts it, "for late in the evening when folks feel like romancing."

In this prize package of mighty ragtime tunes, a very young pianist proves the very old adage (frequently challenged) taht fresh and unusual ability, if given half-a-chance, will be recognized and rewarded.

Jo Ann Castle is an Oklahoma girl who's followed the rainbow of success to the Golden State of California. And she's been making good music practically every inch of the way. Jo Ann, who has played piano for 13 of her 20 years, comes from a musical family. When she was just 11, her father taughter her to play the Maple Leaf Rag. This wasn't too hard to do, since she already had augmented her ability as a classical pianist with an expert and enthusiastic mastery of "boogie" and otehr jazz styles. And she was likewise proficient as a dancer, singer and accordionist. The otehr ragtime standards soon followed Maple Leaf into Jo Ann's repertoire and, as this album demonstrates, she plays them all with vigor, bounce and agility such music demands.

Yet it was an accordion album she'd waxed several years ago that brought about Jo Ann's really big break - discovery by Lawrence Welk. Already she'd aquired professional polish on dates with Spike Jones, Arthur Godfrey and on tours with her own singing group. When Welk auditioned Jo Ann, he decided at once that this sparkling talent was a natural accompaniment to his own popular Champagne Music. The reaction to Jo Ann by Lawrence Welk fans (never the sort to muffle their enthuisiasm) was immediate and eloquent.

"It's been a long, long time sine one of our acts stirred up so much excitement and mail," maestro Welk exclaims. "I predict great thigns for Jo Ann Castle. She's got the look and the sound of success."

Dot Records' president, Randy Wood, thought the same thing when he caught Jo Ann recently on the Welk TV show. he lost no time getting Miss Castle's autograph on a recording contract.

So here it is - the Hi-Fi debut of an exciting young piano player, tossing off a dozen favorite ragtime classics with the savoire faire of a veteran.
