This blog was created so I could showcase my vast collection of Lawrence Welk albums. From vinyl to cassette to cd, I want to show everyone what hard work and determination can yield when searching for out of print material! This blog is meant solely to showcase my collection, and to preserve the images and information on the album covers themselves. Music downloads will not be offered here.

FAITH UNLOCKS THE DOOR
JIM ROBERTS / AND THE MELLOWMEN
ARRANGED AND DIRECTED BY KURT KAISER
This inspiring collection of hymns marks the recording debut of Jim Roberts, well-known television tenor. Backed by The Mellowmen quartet and orchestra directed by Kurt Kaiser, he sings a dozen sacred songs. Some of these are old favorites and some are excellent new tunes by modern composers.
Several years ago Jim sang the title song, FAITH UNLOCKS THE DOOR, on the Lawrence Welk Television Program. It was natural that this happened because of Jim's early upbringing by Methodist parents in Kentucky. The hymns and gospel songs that had come to mean so much during his "growing up years" continued to be a part of his adult life.
As a result of the impact of Jim's singing FAITH UNLOCKS THE DOOR, Mr. Welk started including more and more hymns in his program. Like a swelling tide, the demand for an album of Jim Roberts singing these same hymns has brought requests from people all over America. Many of the songs included in this album are those that have been most enthusiastically applauded by a mltitude of viewers.
Jim Roberts was born in Madisonville, Kentucky. He is the youngest of eight children. During World War II, Jim served his country in the Army Air Force, and it was there that he began his singing career. Following his discharge he began studying at the Herbert Walls Conservatory of Music. From there he sang in civic light opera in Los Angeles and San Francisco. He joined Lawrence Welk in 1954, and has become one of the most popular artists on the Welk program.
Jim's church background is constantly evident, and was instrumental in his choosing sacred songs to sing on television and for this album. He is a devoted husband and father of two sons. The Jim Roberts make their home in Los Angeles.

WORD
This lovely lady of song is performing some of the best loved sacred songs of yesteryear and tomorrow.
During the past several years Norma has experienced deep personal trials of illness in her family. We sometimes feel that people of renown, people in places of recognition, are somehow spared the problems and deep hurts that the rest of us experience.
The overriding thought that I feel about Norma Zimmer is that behind her radiant smile is a genuineness, and now a deepening and maturing Christian woman is emerging. Those qualities that Christ has promised his children-the removal of dross and the emergence of pure gold...this is what I feel is happening to this winsome woman.
Many thanks to the talented Ron Huff. He has provided lovely musical settings on top of which Norma can sing buoyantly, tenderly, and convincingly.

(Based on a Theme froM Schubert's "Unfinished Symphony")
It seems likely that Dick Kesner's Stradivarious has been heard and seen by more people than any other violin in the world. Each week, millions of TV viewers listen and watch in rapt attention as Dick produced magic sounds with this beautiful instrument on the Lawrence Welk Show. He has been a consistent favorite with the audience of this highly rated television program.
Dick's legion of fans will be delighted to discover that this album contains mane of the songs which receive widest acclaim when he performs them on the air. They are all familiar melodies, beautifully presented with Kesner's impeccable taste and ability.
Providing a fine background for Dick and his magic "Strad" is the orchestra conducted by Robert Ballard. Comprised of four violas , four celli and rhythm section, the orchestra provides a soft, listenable danceable backdrop.
Like a great many members of teh Lawrence Welk organization, Dick Kesner was born and raised in the Mid-West. A native of Sheldon, Iowa, Dick began his musical training on piano at the age of seven. At ten, he gave it up and began studying his first love, violin. His years of study with various teachers were climaxed by a three-year scholarship at the American Conservatory in Chicago.
He began his professional career in 1935, teaching and playing iwth various dance bands, including Frankie Masters and Herbie Holmes. As with millions of other young men, his career was later inerrupted by three and one-half years as an infantryman in the Philippines and Okinawa.
After the war, Kesner located with his wife, Muriel, in San Francisco. There he played with the Symphony, organized his own gypsy combo and was on staff with ABC Radio.
He left San Francisco in 1950 and toured with the Fredie Martin Orchestra until joining Lawrence Welk in 1953. He has been a "regular" with Welk since that time. He now lives in a suburb of Los Angels with his wife and three daughters.
So here is Dick with his famous, old and beautiful Stradivarius violin (the label and papers state that it was made in 1717). He and the violin become one in presenting this collection of familiar, well-loved and beautiful melodies, superbly recorded for the utmost in listening and dancing pleasure.

Two things-one over two centuries old, the other less than a few decades-have contributed most to the astounding success and wide recognition of violinist Dick Kesner. The first item is his magnificent Stradivarius violin, made, according to reliable records, early in the eighteenth century. The second factor is television, through which, as First Violinist for the famous Lawrence Welk group, he was seen and heard by perhaps more people than any other violinist in the history of music.
In this album, Mr. Kesner plays a collection of Gypsy melodies-music more ideally suited to the silken magic of the violin than any other.
The album opens with Franz Liszt's immortal Hungarian Rhapsody #2, and includes a delightful variety of melodies ranging in its tremendous scope from the plaintive When A Gypsy Makes His Violin Cry to Brahm's fiery Hungarian Dance #5, the poignant Softly As In A Morning Sunrise, Noel Coward's beautiful Zigeuner, Victor Herbert's Gypsy Love Song, a Dick Kesner original, Gypsy, and many more.
The Sound Of Gypsy Music represents the music of Dick Kesner and his Magic Stradivarius at its most enchanting-offering the listener a richly rendered treasury of some of the most beautiful melodies ever written.

CHAMPAGNE MUSIC
"To some 20,000,000-twenty million-viewers, Lawrence Welk is the finest thing that has happened to popular music in two decades." This is said on the authority of TV Guide which recently devoted a feature article to Welk and his music under the title "A Good Time for Mother," to which was added this subtitle: "That's the Philosophy behind Lawrence Welk's Tremendous Success."
Practically everybody-or at least everybody who looks at television-knows that every Saturday night Welk's orchestra is seen and heard from coast to coast. They also know that his music is popular with listeners of every age-teenages, middle-agers, and oldsters.
By this time almost everybody also knows the Lawrence Welk story. They know that, in 1878, the Welk family came from Alscace-Lorraine, on the border between France and Germany, and settled in a North Dakota town which bore the Alsatian name of Strasburg. When he was sill a child Lawrence picked out tunes by ear on the family parlor organ-probably this childhood association made him use the modern electric organ which he now features so prominently in the orchestra. Young Welk also learned to perform on an old push-button accordion; in fact he learned it so thoroughly that, while he was still in his teens, he earned money playing for local parties and dances. Since that time the accordion has become his chosen instrument-in fact, one might say it is a Lawrence Welk trade mark.
Today' Lawrence Welk and his Champagne Music is probably the hottest dance band property in the record business. His records sell to the point that, with each new release, the number of advance pressings must be stepped up to meet the ever increasing demand. Here's a band leader who knows what the people want. What's more, he knows hot to give it to them.

TO AMERICA, WITH LOVE
THE LAWRENCE WELK SINGERS & ORCHESTRA
The heritage of freedom-that is ours today-was won on the battlefields of yesterday by men who pledged their private fortunes, their sacred honor and their lives that future generations might live unfettered by the bonds of the past...might walk, head erect, in a new world...with new ideas...new remedies for ancient ills...and in a climate free from fear...
It is a long time now since the snows of Valley Forge melted away and the buds of victory blossomed in Saratoga...It is a long time since men, brightly appareled in the vestments of human dignity, first lifted their eyes to the sunlit summits of the Republic - so grandly conceived by those architects of the future...
"We hold these truths to be self-evident," wrote Thomas Jefferson, "that all men are created equal..."Words to go ringing down the corridors of Time...Words to stir the conscience of Mankind...
"Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness"...No other charter, or treaty, or covenant devised by Man had ever been before included that last word. It was like a fresh breeze blowing from Philadelphia that hot July day in 1776, brushing away the cobwebs of intolerance and servitude. But, somewhere along the way, that "fresh breeze" became an ill wind. For a document, however noble, is only a scrap of paper if the people, for whom it was written, abandon the principles; turn away from obligations of good citizenship; flout the law and, ultimately, reject reason and embrace hate.
It is for us, therefore, as Americans - old or young, black or white, Republican or Democrat - to rediscover thee time-tested values that made this country great, to rededicate ourselves to perpetuating this heritage of Freedom, to making the dream work...
We must never abandon our faith in America!
Meanwhile, pointing the way, the symbol of this priceless heritage stands in a harbor, her "Lamp of Hope" extended to all people. We salute the "Torch of Freedom" and proudly life our voices:
"TO AMERICA, WITH LOVE."

Although his critics won't admit it publicly, even they concede in private that Lawrence Welk knows how to pick winners. Whether it's the new talent he features on his weekly program for ABC-Television, the tunes he plays and records, or the arrangements which give such recent hits as "Moon River" and "Calcutta" that distinctive Lawrence Welk sound, the maestro knows exactly what his fans want, what will appeal to them.
Perhaps no musician in recent years has been responsible for discovering and launching the careers of as many talented performers as ahs Welk. The genial gentlemen from North Dakota has showcased such Pickwick artists as the Lennon Sisters, Jo Ann Castle, Myron Floren and Jerry Burke, to name only a few. Each developed as artists in their own right, making their own personal appearances and hit records.
Welk isn't impressed by the spectacular, and neither are his fans. Instead, he features the familiar, the easy-to-listsen-to in upbeat arrangements and performances that make Welk's champagne music easy to dance to as well, if you're so included. It may be a quiet number from the hit parade (it'll almost never be a tune with a Big Beat) ; and oldie like "Smoke Gets In Your Eyes" (usually not one of the brassy production numbers); a melodic film score like "Exodus" (Probably not the driving theme from a current blockbuster). Result: a winning TV series that has seen him outlast every other musical personality who's tried his own TV series (and helped him roll up an enviable list of best-selling records as well).
The current collection is a perfect example of the Welk genius at work ---deceptively simple arrangements of standard favorites. Yet no matter how simple the arrangements appear to be, chances are you'll be playing these tracks over and over again---for friends, to dance to, or simply for listening alone.

Millions of television fans will attest to the magic of Dick Kesner's Stradivarius violin. Each week they listen and watch, as though mesmerized, while Dick weaves his musical spell, his bow moving like a socerer's wand. This same magic quality has made him a top concert attraction all over the country, holding audiences enthralled in every city.
For this album, Dick has chosen a group of familiar favorites, all known for their beautiful melodies. Opening with the strains of the lovely Intermezzo, Dick finds new depth and meaning in such beautiful tunes as Smoke Gets In Your Eyes, All The Things You Are and Old Devil Moon.
Dick's piquant performance of the long-time favorite, Danny Boy,w ill bring a tear to the eye of many a sentimental soul, and the dramatic I Surrender Dear will stir pleasant memories in almost everyone. To round out the album, Dick continues to cast his spell with Tenderly, Night and Day, Stardust, Someone To Watch Over Me, Uncertain Love and Estrellita. All together they strike a warm and romantic chord in every heart.
It is doubtful that any violinist has a wwider popular appeal than Dick Kesner. This Iowa-born musician has garnered a terrific fan mail response to his years of performing with the Welk Orchestra. Each week, hundres of letters pour in, requesting specific selections or praising Dick for his fine performances. Even people who have expressed no previous interest in violin music are lavish in their praise of his interpretations.
So the Kesner magic is at work again. Without mirrors and with nothing up his sleeves, Dick reaches into his musical hat. Instead of rabbits, however, he continues to pull out
diamonds...pure gems of enjoyable music.

If we had to choose the most important thing we have learned during our careers in the entertainment business, it would be to give your audience what they want to hear. Until now, most of our albums have been composed of songs that were our personal favorites; however, we have overlooked a lot of songs from both our television show and our personal appearances for which we receive many requests. It is to these requests that we devote our album.
What thrills us most about this recording is that the songs most requested by you are also songs we love to sing.
We hope you enjoy listening to this album as much as we enjoyed recording it. Please continue to write and let us know what songs are your favorites.

PLENTY OF PETE represents an exciting collection of Pete Fountain's all-time most-requested numbers...performed here by Pete and his fabulous jazz group as they were performed when they originally triggered thundering ovations in night clubs and concert appearances.
The enormous and universal popularity of Dixie-land clarinetist Pete Fountain is unique in almost all the world of jazz. There is an unprecedented scope of popular appeal in the flexibility of his improvisations and the unusual range and richness of tone he achieves.
At Pete's side on these musical milestones in his colorful career-complementing the freshness and originality of his sound with the vast resources of their own skill and imagination-are drummer Jack Sperling; Morty Corb on bass; Godfrey Hirsh, vibes; Bobbie Gibbons, guitar; and John Propst, piano.
PLENTY OF PETE is precisely what the phrase implies...and, if you already know what to expect of the fantastic Mr. Fountain, we need say nothing more. If not, we can only say it's an experience you've been missing quite long enough.

Almost gone are the player pianos...but not the piano players. Not by a long shot. Not while there's a big fellow around with a paradoxical name, a derby hat, a vest that would stand out during a 4th of July finale, and more rhythm in his ten flying fingers than in many an entire orchestra.
He's "Big" Tiny Little, and he plays what some call rickey-tick, others barrelhouse, backroom, or honky tonk. We call it the greatest thing that ever happened to a piano.
In this album Tiny shares the stage with a chorus directed by Charles Bud Dant, and we suspect Tiny and the gang had almost as much fun recording this collection as you're going to have listening to it.
There's Tiny's own Waikiki; Hoagy Carmichael's Lazy River; Irving Berlin's Maria; Music, Music, Music, reminiscent of the days when something was still a nickel; the indispensable, delightful Heart Of My heart; and many many others.
Tiny's piano, the wonderful chorus, and teh familiar old songs will undoubtedly tug at a few memories-but most of all, you'll be entertained as you've never been before. Tiny Little's Singing Honky Tonk is a listening treat you'll not soon forget.

It's a great pleasure to have had Ava Barber as a member of our musical family since
1974. She comes to use from deep in country music's heartland, Knoxville, Tennessee. Ava's first love, outside of her husband Roger, is country music - so when planning
this album we decided to let her record with some of the world's greatest country
musicians in two cities internationally renowned for producing country music -
Nashville, Tennessee and Bakersfield, California.
The result is an exciting album with a background setting truly suited to Ava Barber's wonderfully warm and down to earth country style.
I'm sure you'll enjoy Ava Barber Country - I do.
