The artists united in this album for the first time are familiar to everyone who enjoys hearing good music well played. Brilliant young organist Bob Ralston has been featured on the Lawrence Welk television show for over three years. The orchestra known as the Living Strings is a particular favorite among those who like their music romantic, melodic, or just plain pretty. Arranger-conductor Johnny Doubles is also admired for his skills among music lovers who enjoy the re-creation of a melody in all its inherent beauty. His pen here transforms each tune into a sparkling and complementary vehicle for the Living Strings and Bob Ralston without losing sight of the composer's original intention for melody, harmony, rhythm.
Musical material in TWILIGHT TIME ranges across many styles and moods. Each selection, from Debussy's Clair de Lune to the torchant Guess I'll Hang My Tears Out to Dry, was chosen to showcase a particular mood from the many made possible through this delightful instrumental pairing of orchestra and organist. There's the cheeriness and plain "fun" of Twilight Time and Cruising Down the River. There's the depth of feeling portrayed by Moonlight Sonata and Reverie...the bright loveliness of Vanessa...the tranquility of Land of Dreams. Not to be overlook is the new styling of the well-remembered hit combination of "Moonglow" and "Theme from Picnic." Show buffs are sure to appreciate the inclusion of the title tune from the new Broadway musical triumph, On a Clear Day (You Can See Forever.)
There are many musical moods included here for your enjoyment and given new charm by the Living Strings, arranger-conductor Johnny Douglas, and organist Bob Ralston - a happy blinding of talent for a happy blending of sounds.

Orchestra leaders like Lawrence Welk know a lot of things about dancers. And one of the things they know is that as the night progresses the dancers get younger and more romantic. It really happens. The older folks go on home and the younger ones keep on dancing, closer and closer.
By "younger" Lawrence means the dancers who grew up in the Forties and Fifties liking the sound of the "big bands," the full rich swinging sound that made dancing and romancing a happy combination.
Dancing and romancing haven't gone out of style at all, so Lawrence has developed a late-in-the-evening type of orchestra with just the right instrumentation and repertoire. Unlike Lawrence's early-evening "Champagne music-makers," this group is made up of four horns, four trombones, four trmpets, six reeds and a rhythm section. The songs played are for the most part ones that emerged and became popular during the big band era, sentimental songs that are ideally suited to cheek-to-cheek dancing.
For a period of ten years, early in his career, Lawrence Welk had a six-piece orchestra. It was good experience, it was a living, and he built quite a reputation with it. But it was frustrating. He always dreamed of the day when he could have all themusicians and singers he wanted, when he could produce any and every kind of musical presentation.
With the coming of televisiona nd his skyrocketing rise to national popularity, Lawrence had the opportunity and the need to see his dream come true. He could do all the things he had long wanted to, indeed, felt compelled to do them by the demands of a weekly show that he hoped would appeal to all kinds of people all over the country.
By now it is obvious that Lawrence has more than succeeded. His remarkably versatile orchestra, whether on TV or playing in ballrooms, is capable of all kinds of music-classics-polkas, jazz and all manner of current pop tunes. Most famous of his orchestral styles, of course, has been his "Champagne Music," a gay and bouncy approach to the dancefloor which has never been equalled in public acceptance.
The younger dancers, however, wanted something more solid and sentimental, and Lawrence was happy to give it to them. Now, here is the result - big new sound, the swinging sweet and lovely sound of Lawrence Welk. Here is an album designed, as Lawrence himself puts it, "for late in the evening when folks feel like romancing."

In this prize package of mighty ragtime tunes, a very young pianist proves the very old adage (frequently challenged) taht fresh and unusual ability, if given half-a-chance, will be recognized and rewarded.
Jo Ann Castle is an Oklahoma girl who's followed the rainbow of success to the Golden State of California. And she's been making good music practically every inch of the way. Jo Ann, who has played piano for 13 of her 20 years, comes from a musical family. When she was just 11, her father taughter her to play the Maple Leaf Rag. This wasn't too hard to do, since she already had augmented her ability as a classical pianist with an expert and enthusiastic mastery of "boogie" and otehr jazz styles. And she was likewise proficient as a dancer, singer and accordionist. The otehr ragtime standards soon followed Maple Leaf into Jo Ann's repertoire and, as this album demonstrates, she plays them all with vigor, bounce and agility such music demands.
Yet it was an accordion album she'd waxed several years ago that brought about Jo Ann's really big break - discovery by Lawrence Welk. Already she'd aquired professional polish on dates with Spike Jones, Arthur Godfrey and on tours with her own singing group. When Welk auditioned Jo Ann, he decided at once that this sparkling talent was a natural accompaniment to his own popular Champagne Music. The reaction to Jo Ann by Lawrence Welk fans (never the sort to muffle their enthuisiasm) was immediate and eloquent.
"It's been a long, long time sine one of our acts stirred up so much excitement and mail," maestro Welk exclaims. "I predict great thigns for Jo Ann Castle. She's got the look and the sound of success."
Dot Records' president, Randy Wood, thought the same thing when he caught Jo Ann recently on the Welk TV show. he lost no time getting Miss Castle's autograph on a recording contract.
So here it is - the Hi-Fi debut of an exciting young piano player, tossing off a dozen favorite ragtime classics with the savoire faire of a veteran.

MERRY CHRISTMAS FROM LAWRENCE WELK AND HIS CHAMPAGNE MUSIC
The wondrous enchantment of Christmas and the festive holiday season has been told in many ways and in many languages down through the ages. From the moving biblical stories to the immortal lines of Dickens' Christmas Carol, we have come to know and understand the true meaning of this most revered day.
However, our feelings as Americans towards Christmas in other than a religious vein, have best been told by Tin Pan Alley and the present day song writers. In their words and melodies they have truly captured the thoughts of children and adults during the Christmas season.
They have depicted the sheer excitement of children when they know Santa will soon be on his way-their angelic faces and well mannered behavior-the anticipation of shiny new toys and a stocking crammed with delicacies. Their music has expressed our warm feelings of brotherhood, and our heartfelt desire for good will among men. The longing throughts that stem from Christmas spent away from loved ones to the crackling spirts of a bright fireplace, and the sparkling freshness of a newly fallen snow ahve found their way from their pens to our hearts and imaginations.
In this musical greeting from Lawrence Welk, he and his Champagne Music Makers have chosen a group of selections that are wholly representative of the American Christmas spirit. Whether you spend Christmas in the sunny climates of Southern California and Florida, or in the snow covered countrysides of Maine and Minnesote, Lawrence Welk extends to you best wishes for a Merry Christmas and a happy holiday season.

As millions of our Television fans know, I'm extremely proud of every member of our Musical Family. I'm sure most of them are also aware that I have a special warm spot in my heart for the instrumentalists, the musicians who make up our band, known since 1938 as the Champagne Music Makers. This group has been the backbone of our organization since we first started, and was largely responsible for our initial success in music.
I believe the band today is at its all-time peak, both from the standpoint of individual musicianship and its high degree of excellence as a unit.
Lately our audience has expressed a desire to hear more of the kind of music that built our reputation, our Champagne style. In this new all-instrumental album (the first of its type we've recorded in several years), we've tried to comply with this request from our legion of loyal listeners, and I think we've succeeded most admirably.
We've selected some of the top tunes of the past years and dressed them up in brand new arrangements which retain our familiar Champagne Style while adding some of that wonderful Big Band Sound.
Among the highlights of the album are the distinctive and beautiful work of our flute and string sections, plus some outstanding solo performances by Henry Cuesta on clarinet and Bob Smale at the various keyboards.
If your tastes run to find ensemble performance, top-notch musicians functioning at top level, I can assure you, yuo have a "multiple choice."
Happy Listening,
Lawrence Welk
Lawrence Welk's Champagne Memories
Lawrence Welk's Champagne Memories
"Wonderful, Wonderful!"
With "A-one, A-two, A-three," tapping his toes in time with the baton, Lawrence Welk lifts his arms. The cameramen maneuver into position. The spotlights are carefully trained on him. At the signal, his arms go down and he smiles warmly, greeting millions of fans all across America, as he, onetime farm boy, uncorks his famous Champagne Music to his theme song, BUBBLES INT HE WINE.
Cueing his musicians as he does before everyone performance may seem to some somewhat ritualistic, rather than a time-honered symbol. But for the maestro it is a necessity; his mind continues to plan ahead with metronomic accuracy, so that he can move from task to task with a minimum waste of time and energy.
Outwardly, there is very little, other than his phenomental success, to set him off from any other person of his time. Those people not acquainted with him (and who isn't?), would hardly take Lawrence Welk for a show-business personality. He is not one bit flamboyant and not in the least pretentious. On the contrary, his mannerisms before the television cameras suggest that he is shy-almost retiring. His speech is patterened with a distinct accent, the overtones of the German background of his parents. Yet no one connect with show business will so much as question the legend of Lawrence Welk's success, as both a musician and an entertaining showman.
Turkey in the Straw
Next to the youngest of eight children, the Lawrence Welk saga began near the turn of the century, back on the farmlands of North Dakota. Here, isolated from even a fair-sized community, Lawrence joined his older brothers in the fields. Like them, he polowed and cultivated the land, pitched hay, threshed grain, and hurried to plant seed as soon as frost left the hard ground in the spring, so there would be an early crop.
Such physical labor developed his muscles and slowly transformed him from a gangling boy into a husky, broad-shouldered youth. His physique helped to steel him against the tempestuous Mid-western winters, but it could not spare him from the deepening loneliness or from the strange soundings from within, an insatiable craving that was tempering his spirit. Perhaps he was hardly old enough to understand it then, but his musical bent stood in the way of ever allowing him to be content to spend the rest of his life on a farm.
At a very tender age, young Lawrence was drawn to the accordion his father brought with him from Europe. Self-taught, he used to practice incessantly as the blizzards swpt in from the north, while the snow piled up beyond the windows and the wind unleashed its demonic fury and the wolves howled eerily from the dark clump of trees just over the swell of the fields.
Although his formal education ended abruptly while he was still very young, he found ways and means of preparing himself for the musical career that was to follow. By the time he was 13, this youngest was playing at weddings-even though he could not read one note of music. Since Lawrence loved music with a consuming passion, he felt that he had to rectify this deficiency. Therefore, one day he clipped a coupon from a local newspaper and quickly enrolled in the correspondence coursess offered by the United States School of Music.
Even as a child, music had become his all. Many hours he would sit by himself in the hayloft and play his beloved accordion. In his spare time, which was indeed rare, he want so far as to build a violin with bits of sticks, string, and a box.

HERE IS A CHARMING IDEA captivatingly presented. Here, as the title promises, is a collection of some of musical America's most popular girl-friends. Heralded by the famous introductory title-song, we have such tuneful sweethearts as "Annabelle," "Mary Lou," Josephine," Emaline," "Dolores," and other names celebrated in haunting melodies. Entrancing in themselves, they are given still further charm by the Lawrence Welk treatment.
Lawrence Welk's popularity has increased to such an extent that 90 million listeners relax or dance to his "Champagne Music" each week when Welk gives out with his "Armed Forces Radio Show." These facts and figures are gleaned from Disk, "the little-giant magazine of recorded music," which featured "The Lawrence Welk Story" in its June, 1955 number.
The story began even before Lawrence's birth. It began when Ludwig Welk fled from his native Alsace-Lorraine in 1878 after Bismark's Prussians had invaded France. Ludwig made his escape, crossed the Atlantic and, with other Alsatians, settled on a small North Dakota farm which carried the Alsatian name of Strasburg. There were eight Welk children. Lawrence was the next to the youngest, and from his father he inherited so great a love for music that he mastered his favorite instrument, the accordion, before he was in his teens. At thirteen, although he had never had formal instruction, young Larry was already playing for community dances. He made his first personal appearance on the inaugural broadcast of radio station WNAX at Yankton, South Dakota - his "orchestra" consisted of drums and accordion. Soon he hadded a saxophone and a piano, and gave his group such fancy names as "The Hotsy Totsy Boys," "Lawrence Welk and His Honolulu Fruit Gum Orchestra," and "The Biggest Little Band in America" - this last because its five members performed on thirty instruments.
Lawrence Welk's organization survived all these titles. Gradually the orchestra was enlarged - it changed its character - the instruments were regrouped - new rhythms and new arrangements were introduced. Finally it achieved that characteristic lightness and bouncing effervescence which earned it the appropriately bubbling name of "Champagne Music."

There seems to be nothing that Lawrence Welk cannot do. His "Sparklin Strings" and his "Champagne Music" dispense a great variety of musical highlights to the millions of listeners who relax or dance whenever his organization is heard on the air. In this album, one of America's favorite bands features some of the most popular Irish music ever composed. Although all the numbers are Irish in character, they belong to several categories. There are, for instance, such great standards as "McNamara's Band," "When Irish Eyes Are Smiling," "Ireland Must Be Heaven For My Mother Came From There"; such highly original songs as "Irish Alphabet," "Tis the Luck of the Irish," the merry "Shamrocks, Shillelaghs and Shenanigans," "Dance Aroun' A Stack of Barley," which is really an Irish Barn Dance; and songs which have the quality and color of a folk song, like "Wild Colonial Boy," "An Irish Soldier Boy," and "The Story of Kevin Barry," which is a tragic and noble tribute to the martyr who died for liberty.
For the cause he proudly cherish Then to death he walked that morning
This sad parting had to be; That old Ireland might be free.
Lawrence Welk emphasizes the vigor, the humor, and the basic appeal of all these numbers. He communicates the spirit of another culture, for he is a product of a cultural background from abroad. When the Prussians invaded France in 1878, Ludwig Welk escaped from his native Alsace-Lorraine and, with other Alsatians, came to America. They settled on a small North Dakota farm which had the Alsatian name of Strasburg. In the course of time there were eight Welk children, and Lawrence was next to the youngest. From his father, Ludwig, the boy inherited so great a love for music that he mastered the accordion while he was still a child. At thirteen, without formal instruction, Larry was already playing for community dances. He made his first personal appearance on the inaugural broadcast of radio station WNAX at Yankton, South Dakota - his "orchestra" consisted of drums and accordion. Soon he added a saxophone and a piano and gave his group such fancy names as "The Hotsy Totsy Boys," "Lawrence Welk and His Honolulu Fruit Gum Orchestra," and "The Biggest Little Band in AMerica" - this last because its five members peformed on thirty instruments.
Lawrence Welk's organization survived all these titles. Gradually the orchestra was enlarged - it changed its character - the instruments were regrouped - new rhythms and new arrangements were introduced - and finally it achieved that characteristic lightness and bouncing effervescence which earned it the appropriately bubbling name of "Champagne Music."

LAWRENCE WELK
In 1952, the manager of the Aragon Ballroom in Santa Monica, Calif. was looking for a dance band to fill a six-week engagement. The manager didn't have much money to spend, but he finally persuaded a bandleader named Lawrence Welk, from Strasburg, North Dakota, to bring his musicians in to play. Five years later, Welk was still at the Aragon Ballroom, even though he had become the star of a network television show and was one of the biggest bands on records. Lawrence Welk continued to play at the Aragon until 1961, when the pressure of outside engagements plus the promise of a lucrative long-tern engagement from the Hollywood Palladium made it necessary to leave.
Lawrence Welk has been playing his kind of music for audiences in all parts of the United States for nearly 40 years. It was early in the 1920s when he left the family farm in Strasburg to join a 6-man band billing itself as "The Biggest Little Band in America". The band played one-night stands througout the Dakotas, and by 1925 had its own radio show. The fans were fantastically loyal, and whenever a date was announced at the local Legion hall, the tickets were sold out weeks in advance.
In 1928, Welk moved to Pittsburgh, and began playing some of the more important Eastern ballrooms. For the first time, he came to the attention of music critics, who tagged his style as "Mickey Mouse music." Not only the critics but other bandleaders ridiculed his "cornball" style. The criticism didn't bother Welk. Recently he noted that the other big-name dance bands of the 1940s and early 1950s began playing for their own amusement and eventually got musically over the heads of their audiences. Welk may be square, but he has the same fanatic following today he had in the Dakotas in the 1920s - and he's had to change his style hardly at all to do it.
Welk's secret is that he plays familiar favorites, sticks to a danceable tempo, and avoids elaborate arrangements. While this results in music which American critics call "square," European musicologists have compared Welk's style favorably with the musette orchestras of Paris, Brussels and other cities, which utilize the accordion for all it's worth.

Save The Last Dance For Me
Millions of people listen to his many record albums. Thousands beg for tickets to his weekly coast-to-coast television show. On weekends, the Aragon Ballroom in Santa Monica, California is filled to capacity, and has ever since he and his Champagne Music Makers opened there in 1951.
Yet the story of Lawrence Welk is a comparatively simple one.Lawrence formed his first orchestra in Aberdeen, South Dakota. It consisted of drums and accordion. He ultimately augmented the group with a saxophone and piano and with this combination got his first appearance on radio station WNAX of Yankton, South Dakota.
By 1927, Lawrence Welk's orchestra had grown to six pieces and was known as the "Biggest Little Band In America.
Eventually, Lawrene began to experiment with new sounds in music and hit upon a grouping of instruments which created a bouncing, effervescent effect. He liked it and had the style employed in all his arrangements. Because of its lightness in quality and bubbling flow it was labeled "Champagne Music.
One of the busiest men in show business today, Lawrence finds time to read every fan letter personally. He loves to give mementos to people who come to meet him: pencils, fountain-pens, calendar cards, letter-openers, cuff-links, earrings and dozens of other items, which he buys by the thousands to distribute like Santa Claus.
"I like to see people smile and laugh," he says in explaining these gifts. "the greatest joy life can hold for any man is the pleasure of giving." And that, it seems, is Lawrence's credo.
